When Susi and Alex visited the Algarve in October 2019, they did not ask Mayday for the easiest dog to adopt. They asked about a dog who might otherwise be overlooked. That dog was O'kimi, now called Polly.
Polly was frightened of cars, loud noises, unfamiliar people and much of the world around her. She also struggled deeply with separation. On one occasion, she jumped from a window while trying to find her family. It was a frightening lesson in how strongly she needed safety, careful management and the presence of people she trusted.
At home, Polly joined Henry, an older dog who had not previously been very interested in canine company. Their relationship found its own rhythm. Polly's confident side gave Henry a reason to play and connect, while life with Henry helped make the household feel like a pack.
The family faced another serious challenge in early 2024. After Polly aspirated a small piece of food, veterinarians discovered that she has von Willebrand disease, a bleeding disorder. She became critically ill, but plasma treatment saved her life. The experience made her family even more aware of how precious their time together is.
Polly is still very much herself. She watches anything that moves through the sky, would happily chase wildlife if allowed and has firm opinions about vegetables in her food. She is selective with affection, but the trust she gives is profound.
Her story is not about becoming a different dog. It is about finding people prepared to understand the dog in front of them. Susi and Alex saw past the fear, accepted the responsibility and gave Polly the stable family life she needed.
