Tucked into private woodland near Vila do Bispo, not far from Sagres, Mayday Algarve is a small dog sanctuary with a very big daily routine. Karen Breen and her husband opened their home and began taking in abandoned animals in 2010. Some arrived from the streets and fields of the Western Algarve; others came from a local municipal kennel. All of them needed somewhere safe.
Mayday can care for up to 100 animals at any one time. That means a lot of bowls, bedding, muddy paws and individual personalities, but the purpose has stayed simple: give every dog the care they need while the right home comes into reach.
A safe haven in the Western Algarve
Mayday sits within the natural landscape around Vila do Bispo. The dogs live in large spaces with other dogs, with room to run, play and settle at their own pace. Their houses sit beneath covered structures that protect them from bad weather and provide shade through the hot Algarve summer.
No two arrivals are the same. Some dogs are ready to greet everyone. Others need quiet, patience and time before they feel safe enough to show who they really are. The team gets to know them without rushing the process.
What daily dog rescue care looks like
The practical work starts every morning and keeps going. Pens are cleaned, bedding is changed, food and fresh water are prepared, and every dog is watched carefully for changes in health or behaviour.
Dogs receive the veterinary treatment they need, alongside regular care such as vaccinations, deworming and flea and tick prevention. When puppies arrive without their mother, the work can include bottle-feeding and helping them learn how to feel comfortable around people.
It is not glamorous work every minute. There are plenty of buckets and washing. But there are also first tail wags, calm walks and the moment a worried dog decides to come a little closer.
Finding the right home, not simply the first one
A dog rescue is more than a place to stay. Mayday works to find loving homes for as many dogs as possible, matching the dog’s needs with the life an adopter can genuinely offer.
