You do not need to know everything before you arrive. You do need patience, reliability, a willingness to learn and respect for the team's guidance.

What to expect

Time that matters to the dogs.

Volunteers usually help for around four hours a day, with two days off each week to rest or explore the Algarve.

Mayday normally asks for a minimum stay of three weeks. If you already have substantial refuge, rescue or dog-handling experience, a two-week stay may be possible.

There is no set maximum stay.

How you may help

No two days are exactly the same.

Tasks depend on your experience, interests and what the sanctuary needs. Mayday will never expect you to handle a dog or care situation beyond your experience.

Do I need dog experience?

Professional experience is not required for every role. Be honest about your confidence and any physical limitations so the team can explain the routines and plan safely.

Feed the dogs.
Join walks and supervised outings.
Help with training and socialisation.
Give dogs company and calm one-to-one attention.
Prepare enrichment activities.
Clean kennels and shared areas.
Support recovering dogs under Mayday’s guidance.
Help with building, painting, repairs or other practical work.

Staying at Mayday

A simple place to stay while you help.

Accepted volunteers may be able to stay in simple on-site accommodation. Shared facilities include a kitchen, showers, toilets, a volunteer chill-out area and Wi-Fi. Availability and exact sleeping arrangements are confirmed during application.
